We absolutely love the rich display of culture that often comes with Nigerian traditional weddings. One culture that never fails to captivate us is the Kalabari culture.
Did you know that according to Kalabari custom, the groom’s family must first “knock” on the bride’s family’s door to ask for her hand in marriage? Afterwards, they must “open” the ears of the bride’s family to listen to them and their mouths to speak to them.
For this wedding, the women in the community came together with theatrics and plenty of extra drama to bring this cherished tradition to life. Their sense of humour had everyone entertained while preserving the significance of the custom. It’s moments like these that remind us why traditional weddings are so special—they don’t just unite two people in love; they celebrate heritage, family, and the customs that have been passed down through generations. ❤️
