For Yerins’ birthday, Sarah had planned a dreamy surprise getaway to Rwanda, completely unaware that he had something even more special up his sleeve. In the heart of Rwanda, surrounded by lush hills and serene beauty, what was meant to be a birthday celebration turned into a magical proposal.

How did you and Sarah meet?

Sarah and I met at Nigerian FinTech Week. I was speaking at one of the events on fintech, blockchain, and entrepreneurship, and she came up to me afterwards to ask for some advice based on what I shared. What stood out immediately was how thoughtful, curious, and articulate she was. There was a depth to her, a genuine desire to learn and grow, that felt different. We stayed in touch, built a friendship over a few months, and on January 1st, 2026, I asked her to be my girlfriend. From very early on, it felt clear to me that she was someone I wanted to build a life with.

What was the proposal planning process like?

The proposal was planned around my birthday. We were already in Rwanda, and she had planned a birthday getaway for me to another city, which made it even more interesting because I was also secretly planning something of my own. I suggested that we do a birthday photoshoot during the trip, which became the perfect cover. Behind the scenes, I coordinated with the photographer and planned everything quietly. There were moments I thought she might suspect something, especially with all the preparations, but I stayed consistent with the idea that it was just about my birthday.

The location itself made everything even more special; the hills, the calm atmosphere, the whole setting came together naturally. It felt like everything aligned without forcing anything.

How did she react to the proposal, and how did her reaction make you feel?

It was a very quiet, powerful moment. She was speechless, and I was speechless. After I put the ring on her finger, we just held each other for a while. It felt like everything around us faded. Even though there were people, sounds, and movement, it all felt silent in that moment. It was just us. There was a deep sense of peace and certainty, a feeling I had never really experienced before. It felt like stepping into something real, something lasting. It’s a moment I’ll always carry with me.
