Even though she was initially reluctant to give Quam her number, we’re certainly grateful for the friend who gave her the little nudge she needed! Quam and I met when I wasn’t looking for a relationship. I was walking back to my hostel after class one night when he crossed my path and asked for my number. In my head, I had already decided I wasn’t going to give him any attention. But my friend convinced me to exchange numbers with him, and I did, reluctantly. We started talking, and something about him was just… different. I couldn’t explain it then, but I can now.

He just always makes me feel safe in a way I didn’t know I needed. He shows up for me, for my dreams, for my happiness…quietly and consistently, without making a show of it. We were in different faculties, but we always found a way to see each other. And that quickly became the favourite part of my day. His too. Dating felt like the most natural thing after that. And we’ve been together ever since then. Last year, we went to Cape Town for my birthday. Then one morning, fresh off a helicopter tour over the most beautiful city I’d ever seen, he got down on one knee and proposed. And I said yes. Easily this time
