Think of everything that can happen in six decades… then imagine facing it all with your greatest love standing right beside you. That is the beautiful reality of Bernice and Olalere Akande, who are celebrating 63 incredible years together. It is truly rare, and we are absolutely in awe!

Their timeless journey stems from a solid foundation, built on their deep love for each other, understanding and continuous intentionality. It all started when they met at Pa Olalere’s younger brother’s place in Osun State. His actions spoke louder than words and won Ma Bernice’s heart. Somehow, this magic has blossomed into a love that has lasted for more than 6 decades. Through life’s highs and lows, they have remained soulmates, strengthened by sweet love. We were fortunate to ask them a few questions about their bond, and we are excited to share them all with you. This is indeed a story worth celebrating, and we wish them many more years of love as they continue to grow old together. 😍

Take us back to the beginning. How did you first meet, and what made you realise this was something special?

I met her at my younger brother’s place in Gbongan, Osun State, where she used to come with her friends. She was helping her mother sell clothes alongside the other ladies. I told my brother about her, and he advised me to be calm and said he would speak to her on my behalf. When I first approached her, she told me there was no way, but along the line, she began to consider me. I was a man of action, and she was impressed by that. She was very calm and stood out among her peers. From my interactions with her, I knew we were heading towards something special. We have been together for about 63 years now.

What would you say has been the strongest foundation of your marriage all these years?

First of all, it is love, and secondly, it is understanding. Above all, God has always been in the picture.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced together, and how did you overcome them as a couple?

We had a difficult moment concerning two of our children. They were already adults when God took them back. We accepted our fate and held on to our faith in God.

Share a memory you both love looking back on after all these years?

Our fondest memory is looking back at how far we have come and what we have built together. We take solace in the fact that we have children, both male and female, who are doing extremely well in their endeavours.
