It’s amazing how love finds a way of uniting two people from different backgrounds and worlds. For Joanna and Jonny, their love story was being written long before they ever met. The Nigerian beauty met her English Prince Charming in the most beautiful and unexpected way, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Just a week before their first meeting, Joanna had written down a list of qualities she desired in a husband. Then Jonny came into her life, and it felt like a beautiful confirmation that God truly answers prayers. From their very first conversation, their connection was effortless, and what started as a chance encounter soon blossomed into a love story for the ages. Now, these two are set to spend forever together, and their wedding was a beautiful blend of their Nigerian and English roots. They exchanged their vows in a breathtaking white wedding ceremony and also paid tribute to Joanna’s Benue heritage with a vibrant traditional celebration. They look so cute together, and we’re so stoked for them.

Their love story as shared by Joanna:
Born and raised in Benue State, Nigeria, I grew up surrounded by a rich culture, strong family values and a deep Christian faith. Thousands of miles away in Northumberland, England, Jonathon was growing up amongst the rolling countryside and historic landscapes of the North East. On paper, our worlds could not have been more different. Different countries. Different cultures. Different upbringings. Few could have imagined that our paths would ever cross. Yet, as Jonathon and I would later discover, some stories seem to be unfolding long before we realise they have begun.
Just one week before we met, I sat down and wrote a list of everything I hoped for in a husband. I prayed over it and entrusted it to God. Meanwhile, Jonathon was intentionally searching for a partner who shared his values, faith and vision for the future. A chance online interaction led to a conversation, then an unconventional first date at an indoor climbing centre. What followed was a connection that felt both immediate and effortless.

There were adventures, from country walks and cycling through Cambridge to travelling abroad and stargazing beneath the Sahara Desert sky. We quickly discovered that despite our different backgrounds, we shared the same foundations: faith, family, purpose and a love for adventure. As our relationship deepened, we uncovered details that made our story feel even more extraordinary. Growing up, my parents had always hoped for a son named Jonathan. Years earlier, Jonathon’s grandmother had experienced the heartbreaking loss of a baby daughter whom she had named Joanna Rutherford.
Long before we ever met, both families unknowingly carried the names that would one day unite them. What some might call a coincidence felt, to us, like a beautiful reminder that God had been writing our story long before either of us knew it.

On 5 June 2026, surrounded by family and friends from across the United Kingdom, Nigeria and beyond, we celebrated our marriage at Beamish Hall in County Durham. Our vision was never simply to host a wedding. Instead, we wanted to create a celebration that honoured every part of who we were, a seamless reflection of their faith, families, cultures and shared future.
The day began with a traditional Idoma marriage ceremony, paying tribute to my heritage from Benue State. Rich colours, ancestral customs, music and family traditions transformed the historic English venue into a vibrant celebration of Nigerian culture. Dressed in a striking black-and-red traditional ensemble, I honoured generations of family history, while Jonathon embraced the customs and traditions that had become part of his own story.

Following the traditional celebrations, guests travelled to St James’ Church in Morpeth, where we exchanged vows in a Christian ceremony centred on faith, commitment and family. I changed into a structured ivory satin ball gown with a sweetheart neckline, while Jonathon wore classic British morning dress, creating a timeless contrast between the two ceremonies. Throughout the day, British elegance and Nigerian heritage existed beautifully side by side. Historic architecture, a vintage London bus, candlelit receptions and sweeping floral arrangements blended effortlessly with traditional customs, cultural symbolism and joyful celebration.
Yet beyond the fashion, the venue and the details, the most meaningful aspect of the day was the coming together of two families whose histories seemed destined to intertwine. For us, our wedding was not about choosing between cultures. It was about celebrating both. It was about honouring where we came from while building something entirely new together. As I became Joanna Rutherford, it felt as though every chapter that came before had quietly led us to that moment. An Anglo-Nigerian wedding rooted in faith, family and heritage, their celebration was a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful stories begin in places so far apart that no one could ever imagine.

They also had Benue trad, and here’s how it went
