How important was having a honeymoon to you both, and why?

Our honeymoon was really important to us because we wanted uninterrupted time together to enjoy each other’s company and create new memories before the next phase of our lives begins, which isn’t something we get often as we’re both nurses. It also happened to be our very first international trip as a couple, which made it even more special. It was just the perfect opportunity to slow down, celebrate us, and just be husband and wife.

Tell us about your honeymoon destination. Why did you choose this location?

We spent 12 amazing days in Thailand, splitting our time between Bangkok and Koh Samui, with day trips to Koh Tao, Koh Madsum, and Koh Phangan.

One of the funny reasons we chose Thailand was because, after watching countless TikTok videos, it reminded us so much of Lagos. 😂 Since relocating to the UK, we’ve definitely had moments where we’ve missed home, and Thailand somehow gave us a familiar feeling while still being a completely different experience.

When we were dating, one of our favourite things to do was take long evening walks and go street food hunting, and Thailand seemed to offer exactly that. Beyond that, we’d heard how tourist-friendly it is and how incredibly warm and welcoming the Thai people are. Thankfully, it lived up to every expectation. It felt familiar enough to remind us of home, yet different enough to give us the adventure we were craving. Looking back, it couldn’t have been a more perfect honeymoon destination for us.

What was one thing about the destination that surprised you the most?

We expected Thailand to remind us of Lagos, but we still weren’t prepared for just how similar parts of Bangkok looked.  The roads, the electricity poles, the roadside shops- it honestly felt like Lagos in an alternate universe, just with better infrastructure.

Another surprise was the massages! They were so affordable that after almost every day out, we’d stop for a foot massage. But nobody prepared us for a traditional Thai massage! 🤣 We were folded into positions we didn’t even know were ever possible. It honestly felt like torture while it was happening, but somehow we woke up the next morning feeling completely refreshed. It was such a hilarious experience looking back.

Most of all, we’ll never forget the Thai people. Their kindness, genuine smiles, and willingness to help left such a lasting impression on us. Even when there was a language barrier, they would patiently use Google Translate or do their best to communicate in English just to make sure we were okay. That level of hospitality is something we’ll always remember.

Did the honeymoon help you bond better as newlyweds? And how?

Definitely! It was probably the longest uninterrupted time we’d ever spent together, and we were determined to make the most of it. We’ve always loved each other’s company, and having 12 whole days without work or everyday responsibilities gave us the chance to connect even more deeply.

If we’re being completely honest, it wasn’t perfect from day one. We had a few unexpected disagreements that genuinely caught us by surprise, but navigating them together reminded us that marriage isn’t about never disagreeing; it’s about choosing each other through it all.

Beyond that, we laughed a lot, gossiped even more, explored together, and enjoyed doing things we both genuinely love.

How did you both spend your days? Were you more into exploring the destination, relaxing, trying new foods, or a mix of everything?

A mix of absolutely everything!

First of all… we ateeee! We ate to our hearts’ content. We explored countless night markets and street food stalls, especially in Bangkok, and honestly, every meal felt like a new adventure. If there’s one thing we’d go back to Thailand for in a heartbeat, it’s the Pad Thai. We’re still talking about it!

We also challenged ourselves to try things we’d never done before. My husband went snorkelling in the sea for the very first time, and I somehow convinced myself to go jet skiing despite having a real phobia of large bodies of water. We even went zip lining for the first time ever!

One of the funniest parts of our trip was deciding to rent a scooter in Bangkok. Mind you, my husband had only ridden a bike once in secondary school! 😂 Somehow, I trusted him enough to hop on the back, and he spent the day riding us around Bangkok. Looking back, I still can’t believe we did that, but it turned out to be one of our favourite adventures and gave us so much freedom to explore the city at our own pace.

Koh Samui, on the other hand, naturally slowed us down. Staying in private villas encouraged us to relax and enjoy the moment instead of trying to tick off an endless itinerary. We also made a conscious effort to immerse ourselves in the local culture by booking experiences that helped us better understand Thailand beyond the tourist attractions.

One thing that really defined our trip was how spontaneous we were. A young couple we met told us about the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan, and within minutes, we’d booked a speedboat ride and decided to go. Looking back, those unplanned moments ended up becoming some of our favourite memories.

What would you say is the best way to preserve the memories created during your honeymoon?

Take lots of photos and videos, but don’t forget to actually live in the moment too. We created so much fun content during our trip, but one of our favourite keepsakes is a live painting we had done at one of the night markets. We’ll definitely be framing it, alongside some of our favourite honeymoon photos. We also brought home little souvenirs, fridge magnets, and even a few cute things for our future babies.

And then there’s the food… 😂 We genuinely don’t think we had a single bad meal in Thailand. The flavours still live rent-free in our minds, and we’re already searching for authentic Thai restaurants near us because we’d relive those Pad Thai moments in a heartbeat.

What advice would you give newlyweds who are also planning their honeymoon?

Don’t let anyone talk you out of taking that 5k dream honeymoon if it’s something you’ve planned and can comfortably afford because that 10k will be the best 20k you’ve ever spent! 😂

On a serious note, those memories are priceless, and years from now, you’ll never regret investing in experiences you shared together.

Most importantly, choose a destination that genuinely reflects both of your personalities rather than simply following trends. The best honeymoon isn’t necessarily the most expensive one; it’s the one that feels like you as a couple.

And finally, leave room for spontaneity. Some of our best memories came from plans we never intended to make, and those unexpected adventures often become the stories you’ll keep telling for years.
